Recently, I saw a movie that I had not seen in a very long time. For Roseanna (Rosenna's Grave), starring Jean Reno and Mercedes Ruehl, is beautiful romantic comedy that really brings warmth to your heart.
The movie is about a charming and kind man named Marcello. Set in Travento, Italy, Marcello has loved his dear wife Roseanna all his life, and would do anything to please her. Unfortunately, Roseanna is very ill, and all she desires is to secure a family plot in the local cemetery. However, the local Church allows no reservations, and the last three spaces are going fast. With two elderly people on the edge of life and death, Marcello is worried about not fulfilling his promise to his wife. With the help of his stubborn, head-strong, and beautiful sister-in-law, he sets out on this mission possible.
In my opinion, For Roseanna is one movie I wish had been more successful. This romantic comedy makes you laugh, cry, and overall, leaves you with a warm feeling when it is over. Reno (a quirky restaurant owner "madly" in love with his ailing wife) and Ruehl (ailing wife constantly trying to calm down crazy husband) were magnificent in their roles and the story so rich with emotion and character, that I feel this is a must for anyone's video library. An "off the beaten path" movie such as this is hard to find, but once you do, you must cherish it forever. For Roseanna is one of those movies. If you are a film connoisseur, and I am, then believe me, this movie is for you. It reminds you of how great love can be and how happiness is one of the most important things in life. The two characters shine as two people so madly in love with each other that they would do anything to make the other happy when all they really want is each other.
In a world that focuses on jobs, money, consumer goods, and etc. we lose track of what is truly important I think. Life, happiness, and love. That is what the movie conveys. To make people realize that in order to truly live a comfortable life, these things must come first. This movie will have a profound effect on you for it will relax you and make your day happy and joyful.
I really wish that this film would have gotten more publicity for it is one that everyone must see and experience. It is simply magical.
Here is the trailer:
